Cockroach Extermination in Toronto & the GTA

Toronto and the GTA see two cockroach species in residential settings: the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) and, less commonly, the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). German cockroaches are by far the more common and more difficult infestation — they are small (13–16 mm), reproduce extremely rapidly, and live in tight, warm spaces near food and moisture sources: behind and beneath kitchen appliances, inside dishwasher frames, behind refrigerator motor housings, in cabinet hinge areas, and under sinks.

German cockroach control requires a different approach than most pest problems. Chemical sprays applied to surfaces without attention to harborage sites are largely ineffective — cockroaches avoid treated surfaces and simply move to adjacent areas. Effective control combines gel bait placed directly in or adjacent to harborage sites, insect growth regulator (IGR) application to break the reproductive cycle, and physical exclusion of any external entry points (pipe chases, gaps in shared walls in multi-unit buildings).

In multi-unit residential buildings — condos, apartment buildings, rooming houses — cockroach control in an individual unit must be coordinated with adjacent units. An infestation travels through plumbing chases and electrical conduit runs between adjacent suites. Treating one unit in isolation in a multi-unit building is rarely sufficient for a German cockroach problem.

Signs of a cockroach infestation

  • Small dark droppings resembling ground black pepper or coffee grounds in cabinet corners, along the back of drawers, and behind appliances
  • Live cockroaches seen when a kitchen light is turned on at night — cockroaches are nocturnal; daytime sightings indicate a large, established population
  • Egg cases (oothecae) — dark brown, purse-shaped capsules approximately 8 mm long — found behind appliances, in cabinet hinges, or under the sink
  • A musty or oily odour in the kitchen, particularly in enclosed spaces like a lower cabinet — a heavy infestation produces a detectable pheromone smell
  • Shed skins (cast nymphal exoskeletons) in harborage areas — these look like flattened, pale-brown insect shells
  • Grease smear marks on walls behind the stove or near the dishwasher

How we handle it

1

Inspection and harborage identification

We identify all active harborage sites — the specific cracks, voids, and appliance cavities where the cockroach population is concentrated. This is the most important step: bait placed in an area cockroaches are not actively using will not be consumed.

2

Gel bait application

Commercial-grade gel bait is placed in small amounts directly in or adjacent to each harborage site. Cockroaches consume the bait and transfer lethal doses to others through contact and feeding on feces. Gel bait is slower-acting than a spray treatment but is substantially more effective for German cockroaches because it reaches the population inside the harborage.

3

Insect growth regulator (IGR) treatment

IGR is applied to harborage areas to interrupt the cockroach reproductive cycle. It prevents nymphs from maturing to reproductive adults, collapsing the population over the weeks following treatment even as the bait eliminates existing adults.

4

Exclusion and follow-up

Pipe chase gaps and shared-wall penetrations are sealed with appropriate foam and mesh to reduce movement between units. A follow-up inspection at 2–3 weeks checks bait consumption, live insect count, and any evidence of new activity.

German cockroach populations in established infestations take several weeks to fully collapse after treatment — the IGR component is working through a generation cycle. Do not be alarmed if you see activity in the first week after treatment; the population is declining. A follow-up visit at 2–3 weeks confirms progress and addresses any harborage areas that need additional bait.

Cockroach Extermination — Frequently Asked Questions

Why do cockroaches keep coming back after sprays?

Store sprays scatter them and miss the harbourage points and egg cases. We use targeted treatment based on where they actually live and travel, and in multi-unit buildings we treat the wall voids they migrate through.

How long until they're gone?

Most of the population drops off quickly, but eggs hatch on their own cycle, so a follow-up is often part of getting to zero. Our warranty covers re-treatment if they return.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Durapest is licensed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and operates in line with Ontario Reg. 63/09. Our technicians are trained and insured for both residential and commercial work.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Treatments come with a warranty, and any sealing or exclusion work is backed by our 5-year warranty. If covered pests return within the warranty period, we come back and re-treat at no extra cost.

How soon can you come out?

We offer same-day and next-day service across most of the GTA, from Oakville to Oshawa, with 24/7 dispatch for emergencies. Call us and we'll give you a straight answer on the next available slot for your area.
